Hirsutism / Excess Hair Growth treatment
In a nutshell, Hirsutism in women is excessive coarse hair emerging in a male-type pattern. It signifies exposure of hair follicles to extremely high levels of the male hormone androgen in the blood or/and the hair follicle itself. Studies reveal, one-half of women with mild hirsutism have higher levels of circulating androgens, so do most women with more severe hirsutism, although we at Kiara would like to accentuate that severity of hirsutism is not necessarily proportion to the circulating androgen level.
In a society where even slight hair on a woman’s body is considered unappealing, we at Kiara understand that hirsutism can be render to emotional burden that can sabotage one’s self-esteem and body image. Many women with hirsutism have revealed feeling unfeminine and embarrassed due to unwanted hair.
At the Kiara clinic, we take special care to ensure you get the best results. We also follow it up for long-lasting results and a happy you!
The most initial step we at Kiara take in assessing hirsutism is to analyse the complete history and physical examination of the patient. A meticulous history and physical examination can help assess the severity of hirsutism, hair loss or acne, and other problems that are integral in diagnostic testing and management. An equally important step we at Kiara take is analysing the emotional impact of hirsutism on the patient so that a customized management plan can be curated to target the medical, physical and psychological burdens of excessive hair. Understanding how a woman feels regarding her body image and helping improve this perception are extremely essential components of any management plan.
Blood tests could be recommended to examine whether the body is producing excess amounts of androgen or not. These blood tests could also be combined with physical examination to find out whether polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – a common condition exists. Other causes for hirsutism, at the same time, includes hormone abnormalities of the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid as well as rare tumors, can be excluded.
Hirsutism is ostensibly treated with an amalgamation of approaches, which includes oral contraceptives could be with or without an antiandrogen, lower levels or impede actions of androgen on hair follicles. Oral contraceptives are mainly combined with antiandrogens to enhance their clinical effect and also to prevent pregnancy, as accidental exposure of the male fetus to antiantrogens can render to harming fetal development. Also, A topical cream can be recommended to treat facial hirsutism.
Medical therapy hinders hair growth without eliminating hair already present. Hence, medical therapy usually is combined with mechanical methods of hair removal, such as lasers. Laser therapy is fast, not painful, and requires few sessions. Laser therapy destroys hair by focusing on the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle and is ideally suited for light-skinned individuals with dark hair. Longer-wavelength lasers with cooling devices is ideally used for individuals who have true blond, red or white hair and for dark-skinned people.
With appropriate therapy from a competent surgeon, there is up to a 70% reduction in hair density in treated areas. While, remaining hair becomes thinner in diameter within 2-6 months of treatment. Most patients then may require some maintenance treatment, usually every 6-12 months.
Acne is usually treated with the help of oral contraceptives and topical or antibiotic therapies. Hair loss may require androgen suppression combined with antiandrogen therapy and topical means of stimulating hair regrowth.
