Skin tags are small, soft pieces of skin that protrude on a thin stem. They ostensibly appear on the neck, armpits, upper trunk, and body folds. They are harmless. After numbing the area with local anesthesia, our team of the best dermatologists, may perform one of the following procedures based on the location and size of the tag.
- Cauterization — uses heat to close a wound or eradicate a growth from the body
- Cryosurgery — involves freezing the growth by spraying a small amount of liquid nitrogen over the skin tag.
- Surgery — involves chopping off the skin tag at its base using surgical scissors; location and size of the skin tag will determine the need for stitches
Skin tags are non-cancerous growths, but if a skin tag is slightly unique or looks suspicious, your dermatologist may also perform a biopsy as a precaution.
Infections and complications are a rare occurrence with skin tag removal. Some people may develop a scar after removal; however, it slowly disappears over time.
If you are removing a skin tag at home, apply antibiotic ointment to the affected area as a precaution. This ebbs the risk of infection. See a doctor immediately if the area becomes painful or bleeds.
keep the wound dry for at least 48 hours, and then gently wash the area with soap and water.
